  • Pacific Northwest- Tlingit 
  • Pacific Northwest- Haida 
  • The Pacific Northwest lived near lakes, rivers, and oceans.  Because of this food was not a problem.  They ate shellfish annd whales.  
  • Pacific Northwest- Art
  • The Tlingit people developed a thriving culture that was closely tied to the Pacific Ocean and the many rivers.  They were sailors and fisherman.  Since there was plenty of rainfall, they developed tools for splitting and carving wood.  
  • The Ancient Pueblo 
  • Haida lived South of the Tlingit .  They both hunted and gathered but settled in permanent villages.  They used the forests' cedar trees to build large family houses.  They built excellent seagoing canoes.  They traded extensively with other tribes that lived near by.  Trading helped the wealth of certain people.  They demonstrated their wealth with potlatches, they gave food to other people.
  • The Ancient Pueblo
  • They had great skill when it came to art.  They created totem poles to reveal their relationship to the spiritual world.  A shaman, or a person who is believed to be able to help others communicate with the spiritual world, guided the mask carving 
  • They began to farm in the Southwest desert.  They began to build villages with permanent structures on high plateaus in canons .  Some were made out of adobe.  Using a technique called dry farming, the ancient Pueblo grew crops on dry land, using very little water.  Their diet considered of corn, bean, and squash.  
  • They were skilled artists that made baskets and pottery.  They wove baskets and added different patterns to make it look better. They used them to carry food and bring it to the hot stoves and cook them.  AS they settled in, they made extraordinary pottery for mare permanent usage.  They molded clay into jars, bowls, and pitchers.
