Diana is determined to win a race on the island. She wants to prove to herself and others that she is strong and belongs on Themyscira. "Not today Tek. This day the laurel belongs to me" (Bardugo 5). A lot of the other women call Diana names but Diana has to persevere and not let it get in her head. She wants to win more than anything.
During the race, Diana sees a ship explode in the water. She sees a girl fall off the ship and begin to drown, fighting for her life. Diana then jumps into the water to rescue her, knowing that she is from the World of Man and there could be serious consequences. "Diana grabbed her around the waist and launched them toward the surface" (Bardugo 11). After Diana brings the girl out of the water, she learns that her name is Alia and takes her to hide in a cave.
After Diana learns that Alia is a danger to Themyscira, they get on a boat to go to Greece but unfortunately end up in New York City. "'This isn't right,' Diana said, standing slowly. 'This isn't Greece" (Bardugo 81). Diana has entered the World of Man for the first time and doesn't know what to expect. She doesn't understand how to act around non-Amazons.
