The ordinary world is where the hero's story begins. The hero is always out of place here and in Beowulf's case he is too strong to be with the Geats. " In his far off home Beowulf, Higlac's follower and the strongest of the Geats greater and stronger than anyone anywhere in this world."(Beowulf 109).
Entering the Unknown/ Crossing the Threshold
The call to adventure is where the hero is called upon to leave their home in order to protect or save something. Beowulf is summoned to defeat Grendel and save the Danes. " Would sail across the sea to Hrothgar now when help was needed".(Beowulf 115)
This is where the hero decides if they want to accept the quest or not. Beowulf accepts the quest to defeat Grendel and save the Danes. "and best of them that my duty was to go to the Danes great king."(Beowulf 150).
This is when the hero travels to another place that is completely different than their own. Grendel lives in a dark cave with his mother where beowulf is sent to kill him. "Out from the marsh, from the foot of misty hills and bogs... he moved quickly through the cloudy night up from his swampland".(Beowulf 233)
The abyss is the main obstacle in the hero's journey. It is the ultimate test of their strength. For Beowulf it was fighting the dragon. " I mean to stand, not run from his shooting flames, stand till fate decides which of us wins."(Beowulf 620)
Transformation is when the hero has achieved their goals, this is when the hero is able to return home victoriously. Unfortunately for Beowulf he ends up dying after his final fight with the dragon. "and he suffered, wrapped around in swirling flames-a king before but now a beaten warrior."(Beowulf 689)
