Once Huck finds a watchman, he makes up a fake story about his family being stranded on the Walter Scott steamboat so he could cover up the robber's trace. Huck felt proud himself as he says to himself "I was feeling ruther comfortable on accounts of taking all this trouble for that gang, for not many would a done it."

While Jim and Huck rest among the robber's riches, Huck has a conversation with him about their adventures, stories, and about the French. Jim refuses to believe that The French never spoke English as he says "Well, den! Dad blame it, why doan' he talk like a man? You answer me dat!"

Jim confronts Huck about his hurtful prank as he really worried about the boy while Huck didn't seem to care. He tells Huck that he should feel guilty forever doing that as he says "Dat truck dah is trash: en trash is what people is data puts dirt on de head er dey fren's en makes 'em ashamed."
