1492 Christopher Columbus:Italian explorer for Spain, landed in the Americas. He was looking for a faster, safer route to Asia
1519 Pineda was the first European to explore the Texas Coast; mapped Texas Coast
1519 Cortes Conquered the Aztecs for their gold and silver and made Spain very rich . Aztecs viewed them as gods because of firearms, metal armor, horses. The gold and silver was sent back to Spain.
1528 Cabeza de Vaca and his men Shipwrecked on Galveston Island. Karankawas provided shelter and food. 1536 arrived in Mexico City- telling stories of fabled city of gold-Cibola
1540 Coronado and more than 1000 men searched for Cibola. Found Grand Canyon, Pacific Ocean, and went all the way up to Kansas, but never found Cibola. He failed his mission. Spanish ignored Texas for a century because they found no gold
There is no gold!
1685 La Salle arrived in Matagorda Bay. He left for Canada. La Salle was killed by his own men. Only seven survived the expedition out of original 400. Spanish then became interested in Texas again and built missions in East Texas
