  • Judea and the Martyrs
  • The Israelites were the former slaves of the Egyptians. They came from the tribe of Judah and their land was called Judea. They were captured by the Babylonians, the people of Babylon, under order of their king, Nebuchadnezzar. 
  • The Persians and the Greeks
  • The Babylonians captured Jewish people as prisoners and slaves, and many of them were exiled to Babylon. Jeremiah, the prophet, was left behind, together with other Jewish people. He saved the Ark of the Covenant and hid it in a cave. 
  • The Maccabee family and the Romans 
  • Judea, the land of the Israelites , was lost through sin and exiled from the Babylonians. Unfortunately, many Jewish people died but many of them decided to die as Martyrs, rather than worship a false God. Martyrs are people who die for their religion, resulting as an example. 
  • Herod
  • Consequently, the Persians conquered the Babylonians. Cyrus, their king, allowed the Israelites to go back home, to Jerusalem. The Persians were then conquered by the Greeks whom's king, Antiochus, started killing the Jews who wouldn't worship Greek Gods. Under the king Antiochus, synagogues turned into temples of Zeus.
  • The Maccabee family helped the Jews regain their land, Judea, and most of the kingdom of David. As a result they became an independent power again. Due to a disunity amongst the Jewish people, the Romans conquered them. The Jews remained in power until the 40 AD, when Herod, a Roman, was given the thrown of Judea. 
  • Herod then became king of Jerusalem through murder. He was good at keeping his power and remained ruler for a very long time. In addition, under his rule the economy had a notable growth. Anyways, he was a ruthless ruler and a killer.
