Before 1959, the Usa had a lot of vast sums of money invested in Cuba. The ruler of Cuba at this time was Fulgencio Batista. Batista was a dictator exploiting his own country. At this time, the USA had a lot of illegal businesses in Cuba.
After 1959, Cuba got a new leader; Fidel Castro. Castro led a revolution agains the Americans and their businesses and their power. At first, Castro told the Americans that they could keep their businesses. However, he slowly started to take over the businesses which made the Americans worried.
Many American businesses were now owned by the Cuban government. Castro wanted to diversify the Cuban economy, because of that he approached the USSR to make trading agreements and get aid. The Cuban economy was very weak and were only producing sugar which is what the USA bought.
