Storyboard Text

  • Hey Dr.Einstein, I have a quick question. What is the difference between ionic and covalent bonding
  • Follow me
  •                                     Ions                                               Need a nonmetal and metal        Highmelting and boiling point  Can dissolve in water Conduct electricity
  • Ionic bond is an extremel, strong bond held together by the attraction of oppositely
  • Covalent Does not need metals Low melting and boiling point Some covalent compounds dissolve in water Does not conduct electricity at all
  • Covalent occurs when two nonmetals share a pair of electrons between them
  • Na    S                                   Na     S                    Na    S Na                                         Na
  • Mg    F                                   Mg     F                    Mg    F          F                                             F
  • How do ionic bonds Form?
  • Nonmetals take valence electrons from metals, The nonmetal becomes a negative ion. The metal becomes a positive ion. The opposite attract each other; forming on ionic bond.
  • How do covalent bonds form?
  • Two nonmetals pull on the single electrons, creating a pair of electrons that pass between the two nonmetals
  • OK, I understand now, thanks
  • No problem , Bye
