- Mrs. Mallard afflicted with a heart disease, Her husbands friend Mr. Richard, and her sister Josephine all in Mrs. Mallard's home. Mr. Mallard and the doctor are characters in the story as well.

- Inciting force: Her friends tenderly tell her that her husband has passed through telegraph and Mrs Mallard goes through a roller coaster of emotion.Conflict: Man vs. Self , Man vs. Man

- Rising action: Mrs. Mallard contemplates her feelings and wonders if her husbands death is really as bad as it seems. Mallard feels free from her husband and is enjoying the thought of her newfound freedom.
- Crisis: Her friends try to stop her from seeing her husband, who shows up unexpectedly not knowing there was an accident or that his death was announced.Climax: Mrs. Mallard dies of shock
- Falling action: The doctor says Mrs. Mallard passed from the heart disease of joy that kills
