Palm Oil

Storyboard Text

  • Approximately 2000 years ago, Europe consisted of 80% forests. Today, this figure is only 34%. China has also lost great expenses of forests over the last 4000 years and now just over 20% of it is forested.
  • Deforestation can accelerate global warming. Trees absorb carbon from the atmosphere, and carbon is locked chemically in their wood. When trees are burned, carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere rather than absorbed by another tree.
  • While deforestation can be permanent, this is not always the case. Forests are slowly coming back due to conservation efforts. However, this alone is not adequate enough and everyone can/should play an active role to decrease deforestation. We can buy certified wood, go paperless whenever possible, limit our consumption of palm oil and most importantly, educate our family and friends. So what path will you choose?
  • Throughout history and into modern times, forests have been razed to make space for agriculture, grazing, fuel, construction and manufacturing.
  • Deforestation has threaten the world's biodiversity. Forests are home to a diversifying amount of animals and plants. When forests are logged or burned, it displaces species, driving them to extinction.
