man slavery was bad, but it feels like sharecropping is the same thing
darn the south! I should be allowed to go in there! the 14th amendment says so!
in order to vote, you need to pay the pol tax
Jeremy was a slave but after slavery was eradicated with the passing of the 13th amendment, but slaves did get education or any form of experience with anything else besides farm work, so many of them became sharecroppers. but the south wasn't that nice, and were not lenient either. the south wouldn't pay much to the black citizens that worked hard every day just like jermy
even after work Jeremy experienced racism because , Jim crow laws separated blacks and whites in everyday life. even though the south was granted amnesty after the war, they still wanted segregation. the lawsuit of Plessy v.s. Ferguson insured the south that they would get it.
but the few amounts of security Jeremy felt that he had left were taking from him, because of unfair taxes that only black people had to pay for, and unfair tests that only black people had to take called literary tests. these things were called grandfather clauses they were designed to keep black people out of voting. things in the south were just not fair for black people like Jeremy.
