Jonas is apprehensive about the ceremony of 12, and shares these feeling with his family.
Jonas is the last person to be assigned a job. He got selected to be the Receiver of Memories. The crowd starts to chant Jonas's name, and he feels fearful and prideful.

Jonas's father tells the family that Gabriel is getting released. The family had grown close to Gabriel after he had stayed at their house for a year. Jonas knows that being "released" means that you die.
Jonas takes Gabriel and rides his fathers bicycle out of the community, so that he could save Gabriel and so that the people could get all of the memories back. The Giver stayed in the community to help the people.
Jonas finds a sled like the one from his first memory, and he rides it down the hill. When he got to the bottom, he sees a home with lights on.
