- *Old pawnbroker in the apartment* I remember, my good sir, I remember quite well your coming here. Step in, my good sir.
- Raskolnikov, a student, I came here a month ago. And here... I am again on the same errand.
- Part 1 Chapter 1
- What do you want?
- I've brought something to pawn here.
- Part 1 Chapter 1
- You come with such trifles, my good sir, it's scarcely worth anything. I gave you two roubles last time for your ring and one could buy it quite new at a jeweler's for a rouble and a half.
- How much will you give me for the watch, Alyona Ivanovna?
- This is when Raskolnikov arrives to the old pawnbroker's house at the beginning of the story. This particular scene is when he begins to think about and plan the murder.

- A rouble and a half, and interest in advance, if you like!
- A rouble and a half! Hand it over.
- Raskolnikov brings a silver watch to try to pawn for some money.
- Part 1 Chapter 1
- It must be in the top drawer.
- Alyona tells him that the last time he came in to pawn an item, she gave him more than what it was worth. She also tells him that the silver watch he has brought is barely worth anything.
- Part 1 Chapter 1
- Here, sir: as we say 10 copecks the rouble a month, so I must take 15 copecks from a rouble and a half for the month in advance. You owe me now twenty copecks, that makes 35 copecks. I must give you a rouble and 15 copecks for the watch.
- What! Only a rouble and fifteen copecks now!... I may be bringing something else in a day or two, Alyona Ivanovna.
- Alyona tells him that she is willing to give him a rouble and a half, and this upsets him.
- This is when Alyona goes into the other bedroom with a set of keys, he listens carefully while he can hear her unlock a chest or strong box.
- Alyona offers him a deal, which happens to be worse than what she had offered him in the beginning. Raskolnikov only takes this offer because he has already started planing the murder in his head, this is why he mentions that he will be back in a day or two.
