  • But Sir, I have redrafted the Declaration several times.

  • I'm beginning to think we need a different man for the job.
  • Meanwhile, in the Pennsylvania countryside
  • Thomas Jefferson was hired by the Continental Congress to draft the Declaration of Independence.

  • What's this then? They want me to rewrite their Declaration?
  • Jefferson's draft was seen as too radical by several prominent congressmen like John Jay and Thomas Caine.

  • I am enjoying the simple farm life. But, I am wanting to rejoin the political game.
  • The Congress wanted a different writer as they believed Jefferson was unable to change.

  • You know what, I'll DO IT!!!
  • Ben Franklin, having just returned from England, was contacted to rewrite the Declaration.
  • Franklin, although enjoying the farm life, was quite bored and wanted independence.
  • And so, Benjamin Franklin edited Thomas Jefferson's draft of the DOI. Although seen as a controversial figure in life, he is now seen as one of the most influential figures of the 18th century.
