Storyboard Text

  • Valley Forge
  • He died of frostbite.
  • Creating The United States
  • I can vote!
  • Articles of Confederation
  • But this will cause a very loose alliance between the 13 independent states!
  • Articles of Confederation
  • The American Soldiers were living in terrible conditions while they were in Valley Forge.
  • Articles of Confederation: Pros & Cons
  • Pro: Declare war
  • Most states wrote constitutions. Virginia's constitution consisted of a bill of rights, which had 10 freedoms listed. Under the constitutions, a citizen had to be male, white, over age 21, pay a certain amount of taxes, and own a certain amount of property in order to be able to vote.
  • Admitting New States
  • We have added 5 new states: Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Ohio, and Michigan!
  • Delegates believed that the colonies needed to be united by a national government in order to win independence. After much debate, the Continental Congress approved the Articles of Confederation.
  • Falling Into a Depression
  • Let's attack the courthouse and revolt!
  • Some pros from the Articles of Confederation were that they could declare war, handle foreign affairs, appoint military officers, and make money. Some cons were fighting between states, money problems, and other countries taking advantage because the US was weak.
  • Con: Money problems
  • Noooo!!! We are in debt and have no central currency!
  • In order for a state to be added to the US, it had to have at least 60,000 free people and must get approval to become a state. The 5 states added were Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Ohio, and Michigan. There are now 18 total states in the US.
  • The US later fell into a depression and farmers couldn't get loans for their farm, this angered them. Daniel Shays started a rebellion and him and other farmers attacked the courthouse. Washington stops the rebellion. This showed that Congress should revise the Articles of Confederation
