In the 1800's, men engaged in duels. Although it was illegal in most states, it was accepted as practice.
Burr had a grudge against Hamilton because of his interference in the election of 1800 and his election to be Governor of New York.
On July 11, 1804, Burr retaliated by challenging Hamilton to a duel. Hamilton provided the guns.

Hamilton did not intend to kill Burr, but Burr intended to kill Hamilton.
At the duel Hamilton was shot in the stomach, and he died the next day.
Burr was charged of Hamilton's murder and lost his political career of vice president, but he did not receive a punishment for the crime.
