Lori had spent days working on a her Shakespeare sculpture for scholarship sponsored by a literary society for the student that could artistically interpret one of the geniuses of the English language. Rex ruined Lori's sculpture by smearing off Shakespeare's mouth.
Jeannette comes home to find their piggy bank broken and all the money they have been collecting for nine months has been stolen they assume by Rex. Jeanette tells Lori and this infuriates the two of them and broke any last trust they had in their father.
Mrs. Sanders one of Jeanette's teachers offered to pay Jeannette to join them in Iowa and look after her children for the summer, they'd cover her flights. Jeannette refuses and asks if Lori could be taken in her place and flown to New York after, with hopes that Lori will be successful so she could join her in a few years. Lori leaves and doesn't look back as she begins her new adventure.
