  • This is the battle that started the violent, bloody war. The fort is located in South Carolina near Charleston. The battle started with the  Confederates firing the first shots and ended with a Confederate Victory. There were no casualties of war reported on either side, because of the bombardment.

  • The Battle of Bull Run was the first major battle of the war. General Irvin McDowell of the Union side, along with 30,000 troops invaded  Manassas, Virginia. Confederate forces of General Jackson and General Johnston's reinforcement of 6,000 troops  of brigade caused the union to become overwhelmed and have an unorganized retreat.  This battle ended in a confederate victory and a blow to the union who wanted a quick end to the war.
  • Battle of Antietam September 17-19, 1862

  • At the battle of Antietam George McClellan and union forces and Robert E Lee and Confederate forces clashed at Antietam creek. This battle lasted for twos days and caused 23,000 casualties. Although the battle was labeled inconclusive, the union had success in halting union forces back across the Potomac and into Virginia. Union forces acted as if it was a win for them and paraded through the streets Maryland. This battle opened the opportunity for Lincoln to make his Emancipation Proclamation which freed slaves from territory from the "enemy".
