Storyboard Text

  • "I mean I still do normal activities like riding my bike"...
  • " Ahhhhhh, I think he's coming" ...
  • "Ok, ok we are here".
  • "Do you think Auggie is ok? He has been acting weird".
  • I'm not sure... He has been acting strange".
  • "Oh, how I wish I had a normal face".
  • In the novel "Wonder" a young boy named August struggles with the way he looks. He has a sister named Via who is in high school now while he is in fifth grade. Author R.J Palacio writes, "My name is August, by the way. I won't describe what I look like. Whatever you're thinking its worse" (Palacio 3).
  • " Hi, August, so tell me a little about yourself".
  • "Auggie, tell Mrs. Garcia some activities you like to do".
  • "Umm".
  • To add on, August's face may be smushed but when you looked at him his eyes are all you can see. Yet, he has had over twenty seven surgeries just up to the age ten. The text states, "But she says that when she looked down into my tiny mushed-up face for the first time, all she could see was how pretty my eyes were" (Palacio 7). August's face might have been all mushed up but when you look into his eyes that's all you can notice.
  • "I don't understand,I thought Jack actually liked me as a friend. I thought he was different. I didn't know he was only being nice because he felt bad for me like all he other kids".
  • Furthermore, August has gone through many personality traits throughout this novel as friends have changed. August has very low self of steam. He always brings himself down when others judge him. The text explains, " If I found a magic lamp and I could have one wish, I would wish that I had a normal face that no one ever noticed" (Palacio 3). August doesn't accept the way he looks, who is is. All he ever dreams about is being like the other kids. August just wants a normal. Yet, this is who he is it doesn't matter what he looks like. However, he doesn't care about his personality he just cares what others think about him.
  • "Thank you for everything mom".
  • "No, thank you Auggie".
  • Clearly, August has changed dearly with every event that has occured. When August parents started talking about him going to school for the first time. August was a nervous wreck! Author R.J Palacio typed, " Hi, I said quietly, giving her my hand, but I didn't want to look at her, so I kept staring at her glasses. Which hung from a chain around her neck" (palacio 17). August has never gone to a real school before. He has been homeschooled his whole life up until fifth grade. When his parents decided he was going to go to Beecher Prep.He was homeschooled because he all these sergeries back to back he would have been absent either way. August didn't want to go to school. He didn't know anyone, he had no friends, and he was worried about what everyone was going to think of him.
  • In the middle of the novel August's starts to feel a little different. He is very upset because he knows that many kids do not like him and talk about him behind his back. In tex it announces, " I mean, the thing is: he always follows me around. What am I suppose to do" (Palacio 77). As you can see, August was just trying to be friendly and meet other students. He thought he had met a really nice bot named Jack Wll. Well, that was until he overheard him talking bad about him on halloween. The worst part was that Jack said he was only being nice because he felt bad for August. That was exactly what Auggie didn't want, friends who just feel bad for him due to the way he looks.
  • Lastly, towards the end of the book August realizes how lucky he is just in general. He starts to take in consideration how grateful he really is . Author R.J. Palacio typed, " Thank you for making me go to school, I said quietly" (Palacio 309). Clearly, in the beginning Auggie was having many doubts about going to school and even made sure he could stop if he felt it was too much. Well, all the negative thoughts ran out of Augusts mind when he met his new best friends, Summer, and Jack Will. Without school August would not be who he is today. School has helped August grow as a young boy and in education. Overall, August thanked his mother for making him go to school cause he realized how much it mad his life better!
