Because Ellen was white and William was dark they decided to dress as a slave master and a slave. Ellen dress up in a mans clothing and William as a slave. Ellen looked like a wealthy young planter.
They travel from Macon, Georgia, to Philadelphia. They were riding the trains and staying in the finest hotels. Ellen pretended to be very ill. She pretended to have rheumatism so that she didn't have to sign the register at the hotels because she didn't know how to read or write.
After they arrived safely in Philadelphia they went to Boston.
