- Grendel Approaches Herot hall in order to commence another one of its attack on the Danes. As he enters he sees sleeping warriors felling joy. The text says "And his heart laughed, he relished the sight, Intended to tear the life from those bodies by morning".
- Grendel is met with a surprise because while all others are asleep one man is still awake and appears to have been waiting for him. When they begin to fight "His mind was flooded with fear" do to beowulf's skill.
- Grendel runs off to die after Beowulf rips his arm of during the fight. He wanted " For his freedom, wanting no flesh but retreat, Desiring nothing but escape;"
