In the exposition, we learn that Adeline's family hates her, and the only place she feels wanted is school. Everyone in Adeline's family rejects her because when she was born, her mom died.
"My classmates made me feel like I belonged." Unlike my siblings, nobody looked down on me" (13).
In the rising action, we find out that Adeline is finally becoming friends with her siblings (although it is because of a similiar hate for Niang), but then Niang starts picking them off one by one, leaving Adeline all alone once again.
One of the many conflicts in the story is when PLT (Adeline's duck) is killed by Niang's evil dog. The worst part is that her brother chose PLT because he knew that Adeline wouldn't get mad at him because she was so used to being thrown around.
In the climax, we learn that Adeline's family can be even more horrible than they previosly were, when Adeline's father whips her without even asking Adeline what happened, letting Niang tell him what to do, even if it causes pain towards his own daughter.
In the falling action, we see a foreshadowing of Adeline doing something worthwhile in her life, that will affect her in a positiv way, and her family will not be able to find away to turn her win in a writing contest agianst her.
In the resolution, Adeline's father is very proud of her (for once) for winning the writing contest. He agrees to send her to college with Third Brother. Although it is not for writing (like Adeline wanted), she is still happy that she has the opportunity to go to college in England! Everything is man vs. man because Adeline is always fighting against someone to just eat, or drink. Even in this situation, she is not allowed to choose her own college major.
