Solar Eclipse comic strip
This storyboard does not have a description.
I heard there is going to be a solar eclipse today! This doesn't happen often so it is awesome that we get to see one!
What is a solar eclipse?
It is when the moon blocks the sun from hitting the Earth. From Earth it looks like they are the same size but to fully see it you need to be standing in the right place.
Where do you need to be to be able to see it?
You need to be in the umbra (the darker region of a shadow) to fully see it. If you are in the penumbra the lighter region of the shadow) you won't see the whole thing.
So basically, if you are in the umbra you see a total solar eclipse and when your in the penumbra you see a partial solar eclipse?
Yes! Look, the total solar eclipse is happening now because we are in the umbra.
How will we be able to get a better look at it?
You can use a telescope. But you need to make sure that you have the proper glasses on. Once the moon passes over and you are looking at the sun again, it can blind you!
Oh no! That's not good.
To review, basically an eclipse is when a moon or planet creates a shadow on something else.
Thank you for teaching me about solar eclipses! I'm so excited that I got to see one!
