  • The Battle of Marathon was the first Persian invasion of Greece. The Persians were not successful in this battle and the Athenians had beaten them. The Athenian army had taken only 192 losses while the Persians took 6,000 losses. After the Athenian win, they had Pheidippides run back to Athens 25 miles away to tell of the victory, he then dies after he told them in Athens.
  • Peloponnesian War
  • The Battle of Thermopylae was the second Persian invasion of Greece, ten years after the Battle of Marathon. The Persian were however successful in this battle, although they took many losses. Spartan King Leonidas took a small force of troops including 300 Spartans to the mountains of Thermopylae. They were holding off the Persians well until the Greek traitor, Ephialtes of Trachis told the Persians about a way around the mountains. The Persians then rushed around the mountain and flanked the Greeks. King Leonidas told the other Greeks to flee while he and the 300 Spartans hold off the Persians. They ended up killing thousands of Persians, but they up dying.

  • The Battle of Salamis was after the Battle of Thermopylae and the Persian army marched on to Athens. When they got there, it was deserted, the people of Athens had fled. The Athenian fleet was waiting off the coast of the island of Salamis. The Persian fleet attacked the Athenian fleet think they could easily win against such a small enemy. However, the Athenian ships called triremes were maneuverable and fast. They rammed into the sides of the larger, slower Persian ships, causing them to sink. They defeated the Persian and caused them to retreat back to Persia.

  • The Athenian King, King Pericles built a wall around Athens so that they could act like an island. This was good at keeping the Spartans out, but since all of the people of Athens were crammed together, this caused a plague to go around Athens and it killed about 100,000 people including King Pericles. After this plague was gone, Athens was going through many leaders and they invaded Sicily. Most of their ships were destroyed invading Sicily and they were not successful invading. After they were not successful, they surrendered to Sparta and they lost the Peloponnesian War.
