On late December 25th, about 4,000 Americans crossed the ice-chocked Delaware river, surprise attacking the Germans until the surrendered.
When British troops reached Saratoga Springs, miltia troops were there to meet them. Finding himself surrounded, Burgoyne surrendered on October 17,1777.
During this severe winter of 1777-1778, George Washington lead his troops in to the winter quarters of Valley Forge. It was a great trial for American soldiers and the 11,000 soldiers stationed at valley forge. However, many died of diseases. They held together though, by loyalty to the Patriot cause and to General Washington.
