Melody can't walk, talk, or write. However, she is extremely intelligent, but nobody knows that. The only people who believe in her is her mother, father, her baby sister, Penny, and Mrs. V. She learns how to cope with the challenges throughout the book.
All Melody wants is to be a normal girl. She wants people to like her for the way she is. She wants people to think she is intelligent and an amazing person.
However, a mean girl named Claire seems to hate Melody, even though she did nothing to her. Claire makes fun of Melody, making other kids laugh and such, ruining her chances of being a normal kid.
Melody finally learns that it doesn't matter what people think of you, but what you think of yourself. If you don't like yourself, others won't either. She eventually ends up with a class full of friends to spend time and laugh with.
