"Within the wall thus exposed by the displacing of the bones, we perceived a still interior crypt or recess... for no special use..." (5) The grave that Montressor makes for Fortunato.
Foreboding/ominous implications precede dark events.
" You are rich, respected, admired, beloved, you are happy, as I once was."(3) He is isolated and is jealous because Fortunato took all of Montressors friends, making him isolated from society.
Decay / The decaying of a individual who has peaked and now begins a slow process of decline.
"He was too much to astounded to resist. (5) Fortunato is ignoring all of his common sense while he is down in the catacombs, and he eventually ends up dying in the end of the story.
The Supernatural / Something that is unexplained

"A huge human foot d'or, in a field azure; the foot crushes a serpent rampant whose fangs are imbedded in the heel."(4) The Coat Of Arms is foreshadowing what is to come of Fortunato later in the story.
"It was succeeded by a sad voice, which I had difficulty as that of the noble Fortunato."(6) The moment that Fortunato gets tied up in shackles foresees his decaying of himself.
"I scarcely laid the first tier of the masonry when I discovered that the intoxication of Fortunato had in a great measure worn off."(6) Fortunato's sudden soberiety randomly in the story is unexplained.
