He isn't coming back. I need to find someone new.
The man who can shoot an arrow through twelve ax handle sockets may marry me
I am the king of Ithaca!
After Odysseus continued absence, Penelope decided it was time to move on and pick a suitor for Ithaca.
beggar as I am, I was once a soldier, and there is still some strength in these old limbs of mine.
Pressed by the suitors to choose a husband from among them, Penelope announces she will marry the man who can string Odysseus’ bow and shoot an arrow through twelve ax handle sockets.
Telemachus dropped his eyes and nodded, and the prince, true son of King Odysseus, belted his sword on, clapped hand to his spear, and with a clink and glitter of keen bronze stood by his chair, in the forefront near his father.
This is impossible!
Disguised as a beggar, Odysseus entered and asked for a turn. The suitors laughed and commanded him to leave the hall but Telemachus, knowing that was his father, spoke up for him and asked him to try.
Get him out of here!
He can go
Odysseus took the bow and handled it with the hand of a master. With ease he pulled back the cord, then fitting an arrow to the bow he drew the string and sped the arrow with utmost accuracy through each of the ax sockets.
...but all of the suitors failed to complete the impossible task and therefore didn't earn Penelope's hand. They would soon encounter the visit of an unexpected guest.
