Storyboard Text

  • have you ever heard of the hyrdothermal vents that live in our oceans?
  • hydrothermal vents are underwater openings in the seafloor that excrete scalding hot water and air that has been heated by the extreme heat of the mantle
  • the vents are under such extreme pressure because of the weight of surrounding water, its like the ocean is giving the vent a giant, tight hug.
  • the hydrothermal vents are so deep in the ocean. imagine running a little over a mile or so straight down into the ocean, you might be able to find a vent!
  • an expedition led on a submarine called Alvin in 1977 was when hydrothermal vents were initially discovered! tests and pictures were taken so further research could be done.
  • clams, mussels, and other organisms that use chemosynthesis to survive live around these hydrothermal vents.
  • chemosynthesis: the process of converting carbon and other chemicals as food to be used as energy.
