  • Jamestown is located up the James river on a peninsula. The peninsula is very swampy and the water was stagnant, so mosquitoes were an issue and disease spread in the water. The initial use for Jamestown was for there to be gold but what really made money for Jamestown was cash crops such as tobacco.
  • Social
  • Jamestown was intially meant to be mined by the London Company. Many failures were going on and as they were just about to give up, another ship full of supplies and men arrived. They then planted crops so they didn't starve and they also planted a new tobacco seed from the West Indies and soon they made tons of money from selling tobacco with John Rolfe under that.
  • THE GOLD IS MINE MINE MINE
  • First in charge was John Smith, who unified the colony by enforcing the " You don't work; you don't eat" rule. Later in 1619, the Houses of Burgesses was established. Now they needed some one to govern but since King James was across the Atlantic ocean, they created representative government where they vote on things. The idea would later spread to later colonies.
  • In Jamestown, people weren't really friendly with each other. The colonist and Indians kept trying to, and killing each other. Indentured servants came to pay off their debt in the form of labor and once they had they were free again. in 1619, 20 Africans slaves came to work on the island for no pay. The small farms soon grew into absolutely humongous plantations and the slaves worked on the plantations. The plantations grew so big that more people were needed so they brought more slaves to the North American colonies.
