  • Getting a mailbox with a lock and key or code will help protect you from mail theft.
  • "Vishing"
  • Vishing is a unique way of telephone scamming called ID spoofing. This makes the call seem like it's calling from a legitimate number. A usually voice automated call will tell you to call a toll free number and to enter your credit card information.
  • ring-ring
  • If you get one of these calls, hang up.
  • Phishing
  • Phishing usually comes in the form of an Email and the Email is disguised as one from a real company, but it is not. These fake Emails often pretend to be companies wanting you to reset all your information, gaining access to your account.
  • Sometimes these Emails are more personalized, including your name or account name, this is called "spear phishing".
  • How to Help Avoid ID Theft
  • A way to help avoid ID theft is to "streamline" your wallets and bags. This means to only bring what you need for the day (cards, cash, ID). Do not bring your Social Security card unless absolutely necessary.
  • Social Security Number and Card
  • You should always keep your card safe in a secure place, like a lock box.
  • Only very trusted people should know your SSN like yourself, if you're a minor your parents too.
  • End
  • Remember Id theft can happen to anyone, so it's better to always protect yourself from it.
