Dally finally checks in on Johnny and Ponyboy in the church. Hungry and cranky, Johnny and Ponyboy question Dally about what the gang has been up to. Dally makes fun of Ponyboy's towheaded hair. Dally insists on going to Dairy Queen.
starved and malnourished, Ponyboy and Johnny are fiends for the Dairy Queen burgers. Johnny and Ponyboy inform Dally about their rogue thought to turn themselves in. Dally gets emotional about Ponyboy and Johnny going to prison.
Is Johnny alright?
Johnny, Ponyboy, and Dally come back to find that the church is up in flames and a handful of kids are still inside. They both gallantly rush into the church to save the children. The teacher is left behind because he is too chubby to fit through the window.
Ponyboy! I'm sorry!
Johnny and Ponyboy hastily make their way through the flames that are grabbing at their bodies. The heat is cranked up to feel like the inside of and oven. Ponyboy and Johnny cover their mouths and search the inferno of a church. They find the kids huddled in a corner near a window. The roof is crumbling in and there is no much time, so Johnny gets stuck under a huge support beam.
Ponyboy wakes up in an ambulance. He feels like he is in a dream, but he is not. He realizes that he is in an ambulance that is speeding down the road as fast as a concorde. The teacher from the church is sitting next to him. He tells him that he is the bravest kid he has ever seen. He also says that Johnny had his back broke and had severe burns. Johnny wishes for his brothers.
Ponyboy waits in the hospital for Johnny. Suddenly, Sodapop and Darry arrive. Sodapop breaks down crying and johnny sheds a tear. Ponyboy knows that even at his parents funeral, Darry never shed one tear. This shows Ponyoboy that his brother Darry really does care for him, and that he is very sorry for what he did to him the night he ran away. They hug and reunite as four brothers once again.
