  • It's normal elevation is 13,500 feet. It covers almost a quarter of China. Mount Everest is near the plateau and is 29,000 feet. It is very cold in the plateau. It normally goes only to 45 degrees during the summer!  Snow normally falls during the summer months.
  • The Taklamakan desert is considered one of the most dangerous deserts on earth. The name means "once you go in you will never come out." There are huge sand dunes that move and change creating huge sandstorms. 
  • The Gobi desert is the biggest desert in the world. It covers 500,000 square miles. The desert is bad for planting and is a rocky surface. Plants are normally small and spread out. The Gobi desert has almost no sand dunes.
  • A lot of different animals come to feast on the good vegetation of the northeastern plain. There are two major rivers running through the plain, the Liao and the Sungari. The Sungari is used as a road in winter for people travelling across the northeastern plain.
  • The North China Plain is called the "land of yellow earth" because it is covered in yellow limestone. Huang he is the river running through the plain it is one of the longest rivers in the world. Because of the river, the soil in the plain is very good for planting crops. 
  • Down in the Chang Jiang Basin the climate is very warm and humid. Like the North China Plain, there is a big river running through it that is called the Chang Jiang River. A long time ago jungle vegetation was in the basin and covered the it completely.
