  • Frederick Douglass was born into slavery. He had only seen his mother twice in his whole life time. Douglass was given to a new family, called the Aulds to take care of the parent son. The mistress, Mrs.Auld cared for him with tender kindness, Douglass was surprised by it for him a slave was expected a cruel and unforgiving mistress.   • Douglass did not know how to read, Him being a slave not knowing the land of knowledge. The mistress offered to teach him the ABC’s first and then from there teach him how to read. Douglass was glad as a pea but Mr. Aulds was unhappy that little Douglass was learning how to read. He declared that it was unsafe for him as a slave and illegal for his wife to teach him how to read. From then on the mistress was unkind to him and stopping there lessons from learning. Douglass had lost the land of knowledge.
