In 1789 France went bankrupt. The French spent to much on wars. They also spent to much on silly things they didn't need. Also they only had the peasants pay taxes so they spent more then they had. The nobility payed almost nothing. The food prices were also very high and peoples pay was very low.
Due to the financial issues King Louis was forced to call a meeting of the Estates General. The king called this meeting to vote, he wanted the other estates to vote for more taxes so that they could pay all their dept off, but they didn't want to. Both of the other groups wanted more political power instead.
1789 Declaration Rights.
The third estate refused to meet as a separate group, so they left the meeting place and declared themselves the National Assembly of France on an indoor tennis court at the palace. They also swore to the "Oath of the Tennis Court" where they promised to write a constitution for France.
1793 King Louis get Beheaded
On July 14 a group went to the Bastille and demanded the governor to give them guns and cannons. In the confusion a battle broke, the crowd surged and killed the governor, soldiers, and other officials. Seven prisoners got out of the prison because of the battle.
Later in August after Bastille the National Assembly passed the "Declaration of the Rights of Man." It stated the principals of the revolution. The declaration said that all people had the rights of freedom and equality. "Liberty, equality, and fraternity." became the battle cry of the revolution.
After the summer France started to have some problems. Not everyone in France was 100% on board with the new ideas. People were turning against each other, and lots even left France. A new law made by the National Assembly took away all property belonging to the Catholic Church, so Religious Catholics turned against the revolution. King Louis tried the flee France, but was caught at the German border and was returned to France and beheaded.
