After Cyrus conquered Babylon he let the captive Jews return to their homeland, even giving them treasures stolen from Jerusalem.
Cyrus’ heir was his son, Cambyses. Cambyses tried to conquer Kush but failed.
The next Persian ruler was Darius the Great. The Persian empire flourished under his rule.
Darius the Great divided his empire into sections. The leading official in each territory was called a satrap.
Darius improved finances in his kingdom, starting with a fair tax code. The kingdom's wealth greatly increased under his rule.
Darius used his wealth to created many roads. Government officials, royal messengers, armies and many more traveled on the roads.
