My mom is a principal at an elementary back home and when I was in high school and had free time, she always had me leave school to go help in her special education classroom.
Rain! Rain! Rain!
I walked into the dark and gloomy room and saw one little boy sitting at the window mesmorized by the rain. The teachers informed me that he did not talk at all but I still sat there by his side and explained to him that what he was seeing was rain. He never said anything but I knew he was listening to me because he would look at my mouth move every time I said it.
The next day, I was getting to the elementary school and I could smell the wet dirt in the air and could feel the day getting gloomy. I knew it was going to rain again and was excited that that specific child would be happy about it.
Elementary
Sure enough, when I got to the classroom it had already started raining and I saw him sitting by the window watching the rain pour. As soon as he saw me walk in, he ran to me, grabbed my hand, and dragged me to the window. When we got to the window, he pointed out and said “rain”.
In that very moment, I realized that I wanted to work with kids. The immediate connection I had with that one student made me want to have the same connection/impact with others as well. I continued to go until I graduated from high school and went off to college to pursue a career in education... all because of him.
