At the beginning of the story the author explains the setting. It is June 27th and all of the villagers are gathering to participate in the lottery.
To participate in the lottery the villagers draw from a black box that has blank pieces of paper or pieces of paper with a line. The villagers are nervous because they don't want to draw the piece of paper with a line on it. If they do, someone in their family will get stoned to death.
Tessie is picked
"ITS NOT FAIR!"
after all the men got there papers mr summers said you can open up your papers. Suddenly, all the women began to speak at once, saying, who is it?" "Who's got it" "is it the dunbars?," 'Is it the watsons?" The the voices began to say its hutchinsons.
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh NOT FAIR!
Bill Hutchinson picked a piece of a paper with a line on it! Now him or someone in his family has to suffer getting stoned to death. Bill's wife, Tessie Hutchinson, starts complaining that her husband didn't get enough time to pick and that it isn't fair that a member of their family must die.
"You didnt give him enough time"
Tessie ends up being chosen out of the Hutchinson family. Out of fear, she begins to yell and scream at the villagers saying "it's not fair you didn't give him enough time to pick!"
All of the villagers got there stones and started coming closer and closer to Tessie. She continues screaming for her life. All of the villagers know this is the end of Tessie Hutchinson as they start throwing their rocks.
