Siddhartha will either grow up to follow in your footsteps and be king or become a religious leader.
I control what my son does and he will become king!
You guys go ahead we will wait.
Huh wonder what this is.
Siddhartha was born a prince in Nepal in 563 B.C. A fortuneteller said he would either be a king like his father or a religious leader. His father tried his best to lead Sidd. to be the king just like him.
I"m not sure this is the right path for me.
Sidd. was raised in wealth and luxury. As he become older his father was keeping everything unpleasant away and never knew what sickness, death, or sadness was. Even when they left the palace guards went in front to clear the path so he wouldn't be exposed to those things.
Fine be that way!
One day Sidd. left the palace without any guards and only his chariot driver. He saw exactly what his father didn't want him to see sickness, sadness, and death. He was shocked by what he saw and was totally drained. This made him want to help so he set out into the forest, cut off his hair, put on a yellow robe and became and religious leader.
Wait a minute!
Sidd. was determined to search for the truth and so he was taught the ways of life by guru's, but these ways of life did not satisfy him. His next step was to join a group of Ascetics and practice self-denial. He did this by meditation.
As Hindus we believe...
He meditated for 5 years and because he limited on how much he ate by following the ways of life of the Ascetics he became very weak. Then he fainted, this is when he realized that was not the right path of self-denial so the Ascetics abandoned him.
I don't believe doing self-denial is the best choice. I am now very weak.
Finally when Sidd's strength returned he decided to sit under a fig tree to mediate, and he was not to leave the tree until the truth was revealed. He sat under the fig tree for 49 days. The god of death tried to distract him , but instead he went deeper into meditation. Then Sidd. realized he reached enlightenment and became the god of Buddha.
