  • The main idea for The Sports Gene is that Thomas is very proud.
  • Fourth?
  • In paragraph 1 of The Sports Gene Thomas tells his friends about his dunking prowess leading to Carlos Mattis calling him out about his bragging. "On January 19, 2006, [Donald] Thomas was sitting in the cafeteria at Lindenwood University in Saint Charles, Missouri, boasting about his slam dunking prowess with a few guys from the track team." (Epstein).

  • Jump!
  • Thomas clears a 7 foot bar without any formal high jump training surprising the high jump member Mattis. "Seven feet. Without a semblance of graceful high-jump technique - Thomas hardly ached his back and his legs flailed in the air like the streamers trialing a kite - he cleared it." (Epstein).

  • High Jump is Easy
  • I lost.
  • Thomas in his first world level competition after two months of training managed to score fourth in the competition as he did not know how tiebreakers work. "He placed fourth in a world-class field, a result that actually confused him because he did not yet understand how tiebreakers work in high jump and thought he in third place until the results were announced." (Epstein).
  • Thomas showed that he was very talented by passing over 7 feet and 8.5 inches bar on his first try in his first World Championship in Osaka. "Then came Thomas." "he passed 7'8.5' on his first attempt, putting his hand behind as if to break his fall because he was still uncomfortable with the sensation of falling backwards." (Epstein).
  • Thomas wins first place against a gold medal Olympic high jumper. Thomas jumped over the pole on his first jump and thinks high jump is no that hard. "The guy in pole vault shoes who thinks high jump is "kind of boring" was crowned the 2007 world champion." (Epstein).
