Storyboard Text

  • Frederick douglass was born onto a plantation in the 1800s as a slave. He almost never knew, saw, or interacted with his mother throughout his life only seeing her for little periods at night. living with constant curiosity of who his mother was. But he also never really had a place and was Constantly being moved around throughout different plantations while he was a slave. During that time he met very nice and mean people, seeing the true meaning of slavery first hand.
  • One of the plantations he moved on the first of january 1883, was owned by a wretched slaveholder Mr Covey. Frederick who it was his first time being a field hand had Not a day pass that covey wasn't a merciless person towards him, often through whipping or beating him. Never given a break or time to even think, it was hard for frederick. but after all of this torture, both mental and physical you might think that mr covey felt even a bit bad but no, not only did he not care but he seemed to take pride and joy in the pain he caused. He also worked them just about till they dropped day and night, covey never giving in.
  • After all the suffering frederick had enough and finally ran away at night. Narrowly escaping covey and his whip by losing him in a cornfield and then proceeding to take refuge in a forest through the night. Soon he realized he couldn't spend the rest of his life there and starve so he went to a fellow slave who had a free wife that lived 4 miles away from covey. He spent some time there and after a solemn conversation he had decided it's best for him to return to covey and hope for the best. But sandy gave him a special root that would supposably protect him from covey or any white man that tried to whip him.
  • Upon returning he was bewildered to see that covey had not only not beaten or whipped him but he wasnt mad and seemed to be happy he returned. Frederick had begin to question if the root actually worked or not. But he wasn't ready to trust it just yet. but He went back to the work he had done previously and thought nothing of it.
  • While frederick was feeding and combing the horses and being busy in his work, covey came into the stable with a long rope and had caught hold of fredericks legs. And as soon as he realized what was happening frederick had given a sudden spring and had fell onto the stable floor. He then grabbed covey by the throat as covey held on, but he had been entirely stuck with awe as frederick resisted. Soon covey had called out to his assistant hughes and when he came in tried to tie fredericks hand, and right then frederick had given him a savage kick in the stomach, this made him crumble like a leaf and it was just frederick and covey now. Covey had asked “must you have such determination in resisting.” and i replied “you have brought horrid things upon me for these 6 months, i will have no more!”. Covey made an attempt to grab a stick to use to knock him down but before he could frederick had seized covey with both hands. After 2 hours of going at it back and forth frederick had made his mark and had won.
  • After this event frederick had finally gotten the sweet taste of freedom that had long awaited him. He had sent a message to  covey, but he wasn't whipped by him ever again. Frederick had showed covey what he was capable of and really made an impact. He may have still been a slave in form but he was no longer a slave in fact.
