With Britain's victory of the French and Indian war, Britain had a huge debt they needed to pay off.
Yes! We are victorious!
They put a tax on paper? How am I supposed to check the news now?
The British decided to tax the colonists to help pay off the debt. So, Parliament passed the Sugar act in 1764. The very next year, they passed the Stamp Act, which placed a tax on all printed goods.
I know! The newspaper is so expensive now.
They can't just do that without our consent!
We must fight back!
Samuel Adams started the Sons of Liberty to protest against the British tax collectors. They were harsh, and burned effigies of tax collectors. They also covered tax collectors in tar and feathers, and drowned them in hot tea.
yea!!!
The colonists had had enough of the taxes. They attempted to rebel against the British, however the British ended up shooting at the crowd. They killed 5 colonists, and this encounter came to be known as the Boston Massacre.
In 1773, the British passed the Tea Act, which basically gave the British East India a virtual monopoly over the tea trade, putting a tax on tea for the colonists. They were upset, so a group of colonists dressed as Mohawks went onto a cargo ship that was delivering tea and threw over 342 crates of tea into the Boston Harbor. This came to be known as the Boston Tea Party.
good riddance, tea!
The British were quick to punish the colonists in Massachusetts. Britain closed off the Boston Harbor, cutting off any trade by water. Many other colonies delivered the people of Massachusetts things they needed, such as food. The colonists were more aggravated than ever before. This was the start of the American Revolution.
