When Douglass was 16 he was sent to a new master on January 1st 1833 ,Edward Covey, who had a plantation in St. Michael's Maryland. Frederick became a field hand for the first time.
Covey would be in bed for most of the afternoons. Then he would come out in the evening and urge them on with his whip. Covey was a hard working man who did work with his hands.
Frederick lived with covey for a year. Frederick went a week without being whipped. Mr.covey would almost whip covey because of his awkwardness. He worked all the time. Mr.Covey did give them enough to eat but he was rushed.
During the first 6 months Frederick drunk the bitterest dregs of slavery. Frederick worked all day and night. Slavery was so bad & dark that it turned out he wasn't the man he thought he was.
While Frederick was feeding the horses covey came over and wrapped the whip around his neck and they began to fight. Federick tried to get covey off of him but he was holding on tight. Covey called for another master to come help him but he was no help.
