  • When Charlie shoots Pete, they then start accusing him.
  • Theme: Mankind is its own worst enemy.
  • Then when Charlie suddenly points a finger at Tommy, they then have someone new to harass.
  •  I believe that the theme for the teleplay, "Monsters are due on Maple Street", is that 'Mankind is its own worst enemy.' I think this because, when Tommy says what he believes, that there is a family who isn't human, out of panic that electricity doesn't work- they are quick to believe him when Les Goodman's car starts up by itself. Saying that he was always an oddball, and almost mobbing him if it wasn't for Steve. They should've started being skeptical after his lights went on and off since that had greatly overdone it as well. If he were a monster- and he were trying to say it wasn't him, why would he make his possessions do such freakish things. When a dark figure approached the town, Tommy shouts that it was the monster. They are quick to get a shotgun to use against this unknown figure. After Charlie shoots and they find that it was Pete Van Horn, Charlie is then a suspect. They were all panicking then- not to mention that it was Don who brought the shotgun. And unbelievably overdoing it- Charlie's house lights turn on. Then, the accusing starts. Personally, if I were there- I would be more suspicious of Don then of Charlie. See, since he was the one who brought the shot gun in the first place, saying, "We might need this." He let it be passed around- and let's if he were the monster, and he knew that it was Pete Van Horn coming back from finding something out, wouldn't he want someone else to shoot him dead so then, he'd be off of the hook, someone else would be blamed, and Van Horn would be dead. I believe that's more rational then just blaming Charlie who was in a panic just like everyone else. To which was the reason he shot in the first place. When Charlie ended up pointing the finger at Tommy, he's suddenly a suspect even though that he's only a kid. The blaming keeps going around, and all of a sudden everyone is yelling, accusing, and people getting hurt and people are so sure that someone on Maple Street was not what they seemed. And just like the Figure at the end had said. "By no means. Their world is full of Maple Streets. And we'll go from one to the other and let them destroy themselves. One to the other...one to the other...one to the other--". They would blindly tear their town apart from friends to family. All because their power wasn't working.
