South Sudan 1985, Salva 11 year old boy. He is daydreaming about how he wished he were still at home shooting his bow and arrow or watching the cows. Salva was much ready to go home just thinking about the milk his mom would give him when he got home. Just this would make him hungry. The only reason he was not paying attention was because he already knew most of it and had good grades. This shows Salva is a average 11 year old boy wishing that he could go back to earlier days when life was simpler and when he was younger.
Salva hears the loud sound of gunshots going off near his school. Then his teacher yells with her loudest voice everyone run to the bush . Salva took off running with nobody being able to catch him. Salva then realized that he had left his family behind and that there had been an attack on the village. Salva then recognized that this moment would impact his life forever. Salva with no family ran along many people trying to escape the terror that just had happen.
Salva had a bad filling about staying in the barn that night with all the other women and children. Salva then woke up to the scene of being alone in the barn, everyone had left him he was now alone in the middle of south Sudan. Salva hears more gun shots from the area that they had just came from, Salva then realizes that he will have to carry on the journey on his own. with now help or guidance.
Salva is with a big group of other wondering were is family could be or if they were still alive when he hears the sound of someone calling his name. Salva turns to see the face of his own family his very own uncle. Salva is now with his uncle in tears of happiness so excited to see someone he recognized someone he loved. Salva is still lost but now knows some of his family is still alive.
Salva is following his uncle and many others through the akobo desert trying to find help. Many people have died already to the dry scorching desert, he didn't want to be the next. Salva then notices a small but armed group of men then sees there markings on all of there bodies then recolonized they are all nuer. This struck more fears into salvas mind not knowing what they would do to them, but then one the men calls out to his uncle noticing his dinka markings and asked him to drop his gun. With no hesitation his uncle did so the man tied his uncle up to a tree, then salva heard 3 shots ring knowing what they had just done to his uncle. He was know in the akobo desert alone.
Salva is walking to the paper that hangs on the walls of the refugee camp. He looks to see whether or not his name will be on this paper. If he gets on the list it would mean that he could go to a refugee family in america. To his surprise he saw his name on the list in a panic he froze, he knew that if he went he would probably never see his family again but if he stayed he would probably never see his family again either because of the war. Both excited and scared Salva was ready to have a new life in america.
