The people in the village gather in the square to take part in the lottery. The children, men and women of the village all gathered. The children collected rocks.
The conflict of the story is that Bill Hutchinson has been picked, which means someone in his family will win "the lottery."
Once everyone has gathered into the village, a person from each family has picked from the black box. Once they have done this, they establish that Bill Hutchinson is the person who has "won" the lottery, meaning someone in his family will be stoned.
Tessie Hutchinson is the person who had chosen the paper with the black dot, meaning that she will be stoned.
People, including Tessie's very own son, begin to gather rocks in order to stone Mrs. Hutchinson.
Everybody begins to throw stones at Tessie Hutchinson, in order to kill her.
