Storyboard Text

  • After Fredrick's horrible experience with Mr. Covey, Fredrick runs away into the woods. He goes to the house of a fellow slave named Sandy Jenkins. Sandy begins describing a magic root to Fredrick Douglass. "Using the magic root will make you feel free as a bird" Sandy explained. Fredrick is commanded to take the root back with him to Mr. Covey's plantation. "Make sure to carry the root by your right side in order for it to work in full effect." Fredrick obeys Sandy's commands and prepares to return to the plantation the next morning.
  • After returning to the plantation, Fredrick Douglass begins the long and tiring work for the day. Mr. Covey catches Fredrick off guard and begins tying his ankles up. "Mr. Covey caught me by surprise, but I would not let him get the best of me. Without hesitation, I kicked Covey directly in the throat in efforts to weaken him. I continued to fight and would not give up no matter what." Covey barks at his workers to come assist him in the fight, but that did not slow Fredrick Douglass down. Fredrick kept going until Mr. Covey finally surrendered. Fredrick Douglass had overcome his master and was victorious! He was like a fire that could not be burnt out.
  • "After my fight with Covey I could feel my confidence being restored. I felt my strength come back to life." This fight gave Fredrick Douglass a sense of pride and respect for himself. "I knew that I would no longer stay a slave and I would never give up until slavery was abolished." The fight had an enormous impact on Fredrick Douglass and brought back the courage that slavery had taken away.
