The Persians controlled Ionia, but the Greeks lived there. So the Greeks revolted against the Persians, defeating them. The Persians then wanted revenge, starting the Persian Wars.

Darius I send his huge navy, carrying the massive Persian army to conquered the Athens, but the Greek soldiers, called hoplites had a perfected battle formation called a Phalanx. By using this formation Athens won. When they won Pheidippides run 26 miles to tell the Athenians they won.

The new king Xerxes wanted revenge on all Greece, especially Athenians. The spartan king, Leonidas, led a small group of 300 soldiers to defect the Persians, but because there were only 300 soldiers they lost with a rain of arrows.
The Battle of Salamis.
Themistocles tricked Xerxes by telling him Athenians navy was retreating. They send their ships, but their ships were so big that they couldn't manage the boat well that's why they lost the battle VS Salamis because their boats were small and easy to manage.
The Battle of Plateau.
With the remaining of Xerxes army attacked the Athenians and the allies, but the Greek defeated the Persians, and Xerxes returned to Persia, and never again invaded Greece.

Athen and Spartans claimed credit for the victory. Athenians created the Delian League: An alliance with other city-states to protect themselves if Persia ever again invaded.
