The story begins on a normal day, at ten minutes to five in a warm and tidied house, we are introduced to Mary Maloney, a pregnant housewife who is sewing as she patiently awaits her husband’s return home from work.

As always, when Patrick comes home, the thoughtful housewife knows through his job's hard and he seemed to be tired, so a cup of wine is clear away his pressure. Suddenly, Patrick starts acting strange, unusual, and need a talk with Mary that he wants a divorce. He promises to support her financially and does not make any conflict, due to not being good for his job.

Mary does not believe, pretends not to listen to it, and goes down to the cellar to get the food for their supper which turns out to be a leg of a lamb. At the same time, Patrick does not want to eat and going out after that.

the climax of the story is when she strikes a hard, swungthe big frozen leg of lamb high in the air to the back of his head, killing him.
she put the leg to the oven and head to the grocery store to buy a cup of peas for supper so that she creates the fake evidence. She goes home, disturbance to the crime scene, and calls the police for describing what happened as if she did not kill her husband. That makes the police think that she is a victim of the crime
Mary convinces the police to eat the dinner at her house, thedinner is the lamb that she used to kill her husband. While they are eating, Maryis giggling in another room.
