Meursault and Marie are old friends that have become lovers of each other. Marie enjoys being around Meursault and he enjoys her company but shows no emotions he wants to be with Marie.

Salamano is a bitter old man who lived in Meursault's apartment complex with his old dog infested with disease. When Salamano's wife died his dog was the only company that he had.

The Chaplain wanted Meursault to ask God for forgiveness for killing the Arab, but Meursault refused to believe in God.

Céleste is a friend of Meursault who owns a nearby restaurant named after him "Céleste" which Meursault dines at regularly.
"Hey Céleste! Can I get the regular."
Meursault is charged with killing an Arab. He has been locked up for months and has visits to the lawyer appointed by the court. His lawyer informed him that investigators had checked his private life and that he was aware of the insensitivity he showed during his funeral mothers. In court, the jurors were judging Meursault's non-caring personality. The final verdict of the judge was that Meursault was guilty.
Meursault was sentenced to the death penalty after the trial. Meursault is drawing the analogy with himself. Just as his mother rebelled against dying, so does he. Meursault declares that all that remains for him to be less alone is to wish his own execution for a large crowd of hateful spectators..
